چکیده

Muschel, Louis H. (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis), and Jean E. Jackson. Reversal of the bactericidal reaction of serum by magnesium ion. J. Bacteriol. 91:1399-1402. 1966.-Magnesium ion was found to reverse the bactericidal action of the antibody-complement system. Concentrations of 0.03 to 0.11 m MgSO(4) or MgCl(2) were effective, provided that the reaction of the antibody-complement system did not proceed longer than 50 min. Salts of other monovalent and divalent cations, the polyamine, spermine, and several anticomplementary substances were inactive in reversing the serum bactericidal reaction. Thus, the bactericidal reaction of serum may be bacteriostatic under certain conditions, and this finding is compatible with the persistence of infection in certain diseases despite high levels of antibody.

The Activating Effect of Calcium on a Bactericidal Substance for Bacillus Subtilis in Human Serum

An enhanced bactericidal activity of human serum for B. subtilis develops during many different forms of illness, e.g. carcinoma, virus and bacterial infections, and during acute coronary occlusion. This increased bactericidal effect cannot be related to leucocytosis, fever, serum complement, C-reactive protein, or a specific antibody reaction. The serum bactericidal factor becomes inactive in ...

THE PROPERDIN SYSTEM AND IMMUNITY V. THE BACTERICIDAL ACTIVI~ O~ Tm~ PROPERDIN SYSTEM BY ALASTAIR

Properdin, complement, and magnesium ions constitute the recognized components of the properdin system (1, 2). This system, which is present in the normal serum of man and other mammals, has the ability in vitro to lyse certain cells, destroy bacteria, and inactivate viruses, and appears to be involved in the resistance or susceptibility of experimental animals to infection, irradiation, and sh...

Immunological and serological diversity of Neisseria gonorrhoeae: gonococcal serotypes and their relationship with immunotypes.

Strains of gonococcus were shown to be immunologically heterologous. Serum bactericidal activity generally correlated with induced immunity to gonococcal challenge as detected by the guinea pig subcutaneous chamber model. Sera devoid of bactericidal activity reflected the lack of cross-protection in subcutaneous chambers. Factors affecting the bactericidal assay described in this report include...

How Operational Parameters and Membrane Characteristics Affect the Performance of Electrodialysis Reversal Desalination Systems: The State of the Art*

Operating parameters and membrane characteristics strongly affect the performance of electrodialysis reversal systems. The most impactful factors are applied voltage, flow rate, temperature, initial feed composition, and ion exchange membrane characteristics; the pH of the feed also has an effect, although to a lesser extent. To determine more precisely how all of these factors impact performan...

Studies of the Bactericidal Action of Phagocytin

The bactericidal activity of phagocytin on Gram-negative enteric bacilli is influenced by the reaction of the medium; the more acid the environment, the more marked is the activity. Phagocytin exerts approximately the same action whether citrate, acetate, or phosphate salts are used as buffer, and the addition of glucose, casein hydrolysate, or cation binding agents does not produce notable cha...
